NEW YORK, N.Y. - The NBA has hired former Wasserman Media Group executive Malcolm Turner to be the president of its Development League. The NBA announced the hiring on Thursday. Turner interned for the NBA while he was in school at Harvard and most recently worked as managing director of Wassermans golf division. With the D-League, Turner will report to deputy commissioner Mark Tatum and oversee the 18-team leagues business and basketball operations.Turner got to know NBA Commissioner Adam Silver while working on the launch of the WNBA during his internship in 1996. Turner says he is looking forward to working in basketball again and recognizes the growing significance of the NBAs minor league.Seventeen teams currently have direct, one-to-one affiliations with a D-League team and more teams are pushing to do the same. Luke Wileman and I stood in the corridor outside of the Vancouver Whitecaps dressing room at BC Place in Vancouver.OKLAHOMA CITY -- Serge Ibaka walked slowly and carefully, but without a limp, before facing reporters Saturday afternoon. Much has been made of the Oklahoma City defensive stars absence in the first two games of the Western Conference finals series against the San Antonio Spurs. The 6-foot-10 power forward strained his left calf in the previous playoff series, and the Thunder said they expected him to be out for the playoffs. The team changed course Friday and declared him day-to-day. He worked out Saturday, but he didnt practice before addressing the media for the first time since his outlook changed. With Ibaka, the leagues leading shot blocker, the Thunder were one of the best defensive teams the NBA. Without him, the Spurs shot at least 50 per cent in the first two games of the Western Conference Finals and won them by a combined 52 points. As he stood for the five-minute session wearing a black compression sock over the calf, he deflected claims that he could be a saviour heading into Game 3 on Sunday. "Ive been hearing a lot of people saying my team lost two games because I was out," he said. "Thats not true. I believe in my guys. I believe in my teammates. They can be better with me or without me. Its no excuse because Serge Ibaka was not there. Just San Antonio, the first two games, they played better basketball." Ibaka said he sometimes screamed at his television set when he watched scenarios in which he could have made plays during the losses. He is not sure if he will play in Game 3 -- he said it is up to doctors, and much will depend on how he feels in the morning. For now, he will depend largely on rest, ice and luck. His presence is needed, even if he is less than fully healthy. Kendrick Perkins, Nick Collison and Perry Jones have struggled against the Spurs big men. Kevin Durant, normally a small forward, has played some power forward in the series because of Ibakas absence, and his relative lack of physical strength and unfamiliarity with playing post defence has been exploited. The Spurs prepared all along as though he would return. "It gives them another hell of a player," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, "but we are who we are and weve got to be who we are. We cant change what we do." Even if Ibaka returns, it will not fully solve Oklahoma Citys problems defending the perimeter. San Antonio has made 18 of 40 3-pointers in the series and guards Tony Parker annd Manu Ginobili are slashing into the paint with stunning frequency, often scoring or finding their teammates for open shots.dddddddddddd. The Thunder say it starts with basics. "Its just an individual effort," Perkins said. "Got to put it in your mind that you want to stop the guy in front of you, and thats it. Backside got to be ready. But the thing is when they penetrate, thats what opens those threes. Well do a better job of keeping the ball in front of us, but weve just got to be individual and youve got to want the match up." To be fair, San Antonio shares the ball like no one else. The Spurs led the league with 25.4 assists per game during the regular season. That average is up to 27.5 against Oklahoma City. Parker and Ginobili generate many of the assists, but many others come from simple ball movement. "We dont have a Durant," Ginobili said. "We dont have a Kobe (Bryant) or LeBron (James) that can go one against one and finish every single time. We need to pass the ball to find open teammates, and thats what we do, and thats what weve been doing. We all feel proud about it. We know when we have 25 assists or 30, we are much better and we try to do that every time." Because the Spurs generally have five capable scorers on the floor at a time, it forces opponents to have a greater attention to detail than usual. "Theyve got threats," Durant said. "Everybody on their team is a threat because of their offence. They move the ball. Theyve got 3-point shooters. You take away 3-point shooters, they get the role guys and they get the paint points. You take away that and they start hitting the threes. So we have to do both. We have to be able to close the paint up and get out to shooters. Easier said than done, but we can do it." The Spurs are off to a good start, but experience tells them they wont have as easy a time in Oklahoma City. And in 2012, Oklahoma City fell behind San Antonio 2-0 in the Western Conference finals before winning the series 4-2. "Weve got to know that in their arena its going to be different," Ginobili said. "Theyre going to be way more aggressive, theyre going to be pushed by their fans. We just won two games. They are going to make more shots, they are going to attack harder, they are going to go to the free-throw line more. So, there are a lot of things that they can do much better and were not going to make as many shots."   Every night of the Stanley Cup playoffs, TSN hockey analyst and former NHL goaltender
Inviato da: carrie201918 - 2 ore fa - Forum: Disagio scolastico - Nessuna risposta

Every night of the Stanley Cup playoffs, TSN hockey analyst and former NHL goaltender Jamie McLennan breaks down each goalies performance. Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Tuukka Rask, Boston (4) - Explosive, perfect positioning and great rebound control for all five games that led to this series being clinched. The Datsyuk goal came off a rare rebound, but he had big saves on Franzen, Datsyuk, Glendening, and Alfredsson. He made it look easy. Jonas Gustavsson, Detroit (3) – He had some great saves in the game on Smith, Boychuk, Eriksson, and Soderberg. Not a lot of chance on the goals. Monster gave the Wings an opportunity to win. Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh (4) - Huge response game. He looked comfortable and relaxed given the pressure on him and made big saves on Dubinsky and Johanssen. There was a lot of traffic plays in front of him, and he did a good job of fighting through it. Made a great save on Johanssen in the third which hit Crosbys knee and changed directions, he was able to squeeze the pads to make the save. Active stick all game, aggressive and well timed. Sergei Bobrovsky, Columbus (4) - Big saves on Crosby, Neal, Kunitz, Stempniak, and Sutter were the norm. He was the only reason it was close; was really good at controlling his rebounds. His work ethic in the net is evident as he never gives up on a shot - the Crosby back door save on the PK rebound was evidence of that. Semyon Varlamov, Colorado (4) - Strong again. He was under fire but extremely quick but controlled movements. Great crease work again on Grandlund and Koivu. Once again the big reason to the Avs success; timely big saves. Darcy Kuemper, Minnesota (3) - Good saves on MacKinnon, McGinn, Statsny, and Holden early on to look poised and relaxed on the road. No chance on the first two goals against; deflections. The game-winning goal was a great skill play by MacKinnon through a bit of a screen. Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles (5) - Brilliant all night long, huge saves on Burns, Marleau, Pavelski, Couture. He was locked in all night, and you had a feeling he was going to dominate. The ridiculous save on Wingels, where he makes a left pad/glove save where the puck is going top glove, shows how fast and dynamic he is. Antti Niemi, San Jose (1) - Toffoli and Carters are not good goals against; Toffoli has a quick snap shot, but just beats him blocker side from far enough out, and Carters hit Stuarts skate, but check his post positioning – doesnt give himself a good chance for success. He got pulled in the first minute of the second period; rough night. Alex Stalock, San Jose (5) - Did a nice job of coming off the bench and mopping up, stopped the bleeding, had a calm demeanour. Good saves on Carter, Toffoli, Gaborik and Doughty. Rickey Jackson Youth Jersey . -- Terrelle Pryor took the opening snap of the game, put the ball in Darren McFaddens belly and saw LaMarr Woodley crash down. Willie Roaf Saints Jersey . - Veteran Kings defenceman Robyn Regehr, sidelined since Game 1 of the Anaheim series, says hes close to returning. http://www.saintsrookiestore.com/Saints-...ns-Jersey/. -- Manager Bob Melvin shuffled the Athletics batting order and got the type of production he was looking for from the top of the lineup. Sam Mills Youth Jersey . Braves reliever David Carpenter was also fined for throwing at Rockies outfielder Corey Dickerson in the same game, which featured several ejections, including Colorado manager Walt Weiss. Archie Manning Saints Jersey . Joel Embiid was nearly unstoppable in the paint in the second half, and Naadir Tharpe seemingly couldnt miss.FORT MYERS, Fla. - Grady Sizemores long journey back from a series of injuries that almost ended his promising career is complete: He will be the Boston Red Soxs starting centre fielder on opening day. The three-time All-Star is set to play for the World Series champions Monday at Baltimore. "Its very exciting," Sizemore said Friday. "Its been a long road for me and Im happy to keep moving forward and to be in this position for this team." Sizemore beat out highly regarded prospect Jackie Bradley Jr. for the starting job. The Red Sox said Friday that Bradley will begin the season at Triple-A Pawtucket. Sizemore has not played in the majors since September 2011 with Cleveland. He has undergone seven operations since 2009, including surgery on both knees, his back and elbow. The Red Sox lost star centre fielder Jacoby Ellsbury to the Yankees in free agency during the off-season. Boston signed the 31-year-old Sizemore in January, hoping he could still make an impact. Sizemore hit .333 in spring training, going 13 for 39 with a home run, two doubles, three walks, and four strikeouts. He held up well in the outfield, playing 82 innings. "This is one of those situations where the game was taken away from a player and now that its back in his reach, that appreciation is only going to grow," Farrell said. "Theres a greater appreciation that I think any player goes through when theyre able to attain that level again. "He hasnt had any push back with the repetition and the volume in spring training, saying his body cant take it," Farrell added. "We have had a cautious level of optimism with each passing day." Entering spring training, the Red Sox were not sure what to expect from Sizemore. But hes passed every marker. Whats left is too see how he holds up during the rigours of a full season.dddddddddddd "As far as the durability question, we answered it as best we could given the number of spring training games," Farrell said. "He will still be on a progression in the month of April where theres a prescribed number of games played and theres a progression to that. Its premature to give you an exact number of games per week. But were working toward an everyday status." Sizemore was a third-round pick of the Montreal Expos in 2000 before being acquired in a six-player deal by Cleveland in 2002 when Farrell was the Indians director of player development. Before his injuries, Sizemore was one of baseballs most dynamic players. A left-handed batter, he hit 20 or more home runs with 20 or more stolen bases in each of his first four full seasons, from 2005-08, the most 20-20 seasons in Indians history. The only other players ever to record three 20-20 seasons within their first four big league seasons are Darryl Strawberry (1984-86) and Bobby Bonds (1969-71). Despite his time away from the game, Sizemore never gave up on his baseball career, though. "I didnt think it was over," he said. "I just didnt know if Id ever get back to feeling healthy. It wasnt really a matter of playing baseball. It was the little things like being able to run. It was one of those things where youre just trying to find answers." The last few years have not been easy on Sizemore. After appearing in a total of 639 games from 2005-08, he has played in just 210 since. But, on Monday, expect that to change. "Its nice to have some positive news," Sizemore said. "In the last couple of years everythings been so negative. Its almost hard to realize whats going on. Hard to sink in." ' ' '

SASKATOON -- A Montreal Canadiens prospect hospitalized with meningitis has been moved out of the intensive care unit and been upgraded to stable condition. Bozon, who plays for the Western Hockey Leagues Kootenay Ice, was first admitted to Royal University Hospital on March 1. His parents said Bozon is awake, moving around in his bed, trying to feed himself and trying to speak, the statement said. Last week, his condition was listed as critical but stable and improving. At one point he was in a medically induced coma. The 19-year-old forward fell ill following a game Feb. 28 against the Saskatoon Blades. SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has pleaded not guilty to three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a party at his home last year. Deputy District Attorney Brian Buckelew says the 24-year-old San Jose resident appeared in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Tuesday with his lawyer and parents. The charges stem from a June 2012 party at Smiths home. Investigators say several shots were fired, two partygoers were injured and Smith was stabbed. In the subsequent investigation, prosecutors say detectives found five unregistered weapons in Smiths house, including two Bushmaster rifles and an Armalite AR-10T. They say those are assault weapons illegal to possess under California law. Smiths next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 15. Then she lay down on the court, a smile of relief stretched across her face. "I think it was just everything kind of collapsed, all the tension and everything, trying to keep focused the whole week, and finally finished the very last (match) of the tournament, and I could finally relax and I could celebrate," Li said. "It was just all so overwhelming, and I think it was just incredible. So I had to lie down." The 22-year-old from Markham, Ont., dispatched Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland in just 38 minutes, winning in straight sets 21-14, 21-7 on the final day of the Games. Canada hasnt won badminton gold at the Games since Claire Backhouse and Johanne Falardeau took the womens doubles title in 1982. No Canadian had ever won a womens singles title. "I set a goal for myself to definitely try to medal," Li said. "I knew there were a lot of tough opponents, and I knew it was not going to be easy, so I made myself focus on each match individually, one at a time, so I never really thought I have to get the gold meedal.ddddddddddddI tried to stay away from that pressure, so I just had to focus on my game." Li and Alex Bruce narrowly missed a womens doubles bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics after qualifying for the semifinals. Li, ranked No. 19 in the world, said her gold-medal performance on Sunday topped even that result. "The Olympics was for doubles, so it was a totally different event, and Ive never had the same results for singles, and this actually means a lot because I can do it in singles," she said. "Its nice to have been in the Olympic semifinals for doubles, but I think now Im focused on singles more, Im really happy I got a gold at Commonwealth. "Its definitely a huge stepping stone." Li, who was born in Hong Kong, won two gold medals at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. She said this victory sets her up nicely for the world championships in two weeks in Copenhagen. "The competition definitely will be just as intense, and maybe even more intense," Li said. "Every round is going to be tough and I just hope I can go through every round like how I went through them here." ' ' '

Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Bjugstad scored the eventual game- winner in the closing seconds of the second period as the Florida Panthers downed the Buffalo Sabres, 3-2, on Saturday. Brad Boyes and Tomas Kopecky also scored, and Aaron Ekblad assisted on all three of Floridas goals in the clubs fifth straight win over Buffalo. Roberto Luongo, who shut the Sabres out on Oct. 17, stopped 26-of-28 shots, while Michal Neuvirths 34-save effort went for naught. Drew Stafford and Brian Gionta accounted for Buffalos offense. Boyes took a cross-ice pass from Jussi Jokinen and ripped a wrister over Neuvirths left shoulder with 6:55 remaining in the opening period. Stafford, who missed the previous three games with a lower body injury, evened things at the 11:02 mark of the middle stanza off a nice pass from Cody Hodgson, but Kopecky answered 1:53 later with his first goal of the season. I knew he tipped it, but Im not sure how though, because it was a knuckle ball on my end, Ekblad said of Kopeckys goal. Giontas tip-in of a Mike Weber shot tied it again, but Bjugstad found the back of the net with 16.2 seconds left in the second. The Sabres recorded 10 shots on net in the third period but did not get anything through Luongo en route to their second straight loss. We definitely had our chances to tie it up, but it didnt happen, Sabres forward Marcus Foligno said. Game Notes Neuvirth was making his first start since Nov. 18 ... PITTSBURGH -- New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault had trouble finding the words to describe goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. "Hes OK," Vigneault said finally with a small shake of his head. Except that is, in Game 7s. In Game 7s, Lundqvist is unbeatable. And so are the Rangers. Frustrating Sidney Crosby and the reeling Pittsburgh Penguins one final time, Lundqvist made 35 saves to lift New York to a 2-1 win on Tuesday night and give his resilient team an unlikely spot in the Eastern Conference finals. "I was so tired at the end," Lundqvist said after setting an NHL record with his fifth straight Game 7 triumph. "But it was just a great feeling when you know its a done deal and we did it." Brian Boyle and Brad Richards scored for New York, which rallied from a 3-1 series deficit for the first time in the franchises 88-year history. The Rangers did it behind Lundqvist, who stopped 102 of the final 105 shots he faced over the final three games as New York advanced to the conference finals for the second time in three years. The three-time All-Star is 10-2 when facing elimination. He was at his best during a mad scramble in front of the Rangers net with just over 5 minutes left, when he turned aside three shots from three different angles in a matter of seconds to preserve a one-goal lead. "He was OK with guys being on top of him as long as we didnt take penalties," New York defenceman Ryan McDonagh said. "He fought through screens, fought for loose pucks. He was incredible." The Rangers will play the winner of the Bruins-Canadiens series in the conference finals. That series is tied 3-3 and Game 7 is Wednesday night in Boston. Jussi Jokinen scored his team-high seventh goal of the post-season for the Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury made 18 saves for the Penguins, who outshot New York 36-20, but were outscored 10-3 over the final three games. Pittsburgh fell to 2-7 all time at home in Game 7s, including three such losses in the past five seasons. This one might have been the most painful for the core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and coach Dan Bylsma that seemed pointed toward a dynasty after winning the 2009 Stanley Cup. Crosby, who led the league in scoring and is an MVP finalist, managed just one goal in 13 playoffs games. Just as importantly, five springs have now come and gone without Pittsburgh getting a Cup to bookend the one they hoisted that giddy night in Detroit and changes could be on the way. The Penguins are just 4-5 in playoff series over the past five seasons, with each loss coming to lower-seeded teams. Not exactly the expected outcome for a roster scattered with top-end talent that hasnt met expectations. While Bylsma declined to take the wide-angle view, his captain understood the dressing room could have a very different look next fall. "I think theres always questions," Crosby said. "When expectations are high and you dont win thats normal. Im sure there will be a lot of questions." There are none at the moment for the Rangers, who seem to thrive when their season boils down to three periods of hockey. Faced with their fifth Game 7 in the past three years, they did what they always do and took control early. Boyle quieted a raucous crowd 5:25 into the game at the end of a pretty breakout. Derek Dorsett hit Boyle streaking across the Pittsburgh blue line and Boyle tapped it between his legs to Dominic Moore, who waited a split second before sending it back to Boyle. The veteran forwards shot went between Fleurys legs for his second goal of the post-season. The Penguins responded by briefly taking over the game, their momentum cresting 4:15 into the second period when Jokinen pounded home a rebound off an Olli Maatta shot to tie the game. The goal seemed to get the Penguins almost too keyed up. Matt Niskanen went to the box for tripping and New Yorks power play, which was laughable when the series began, provided the clincher. Pittsburghs Brian Gibbons failed to get his stick down on a crossing pass from Brandon Sutter, nullifying a short-handed chance. The Rangers took off the other way, and with the Penguins still scrambling to get back into position, Richards took a pass from Martin St. Louis and flipped it into a wide-open net to make it 2-1 before the games midway point. Lundqvist did the rest. He robbed Pittsburghs James Neal at the doorstep late in the second period and fought off swarm after swarm over the final 20 minutes as the Rangers beat the Penguins in the playoffs for the first time in five post-season meetings. The first four series werent close. This one didnt appear to be either until the Rangers rallied behind St. Louis. The veteran forward, acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay, lost his mother suddenly last week. He raced home to Montreal to be with his family only to return for Game 5. New York responded with a 5-1 win that signalled a sea change in the series. The Rangers controlled Game 6 -- with St. Louis scoring the first goal on Mothers Day -- and Game 7 was more of the same. DETROIT -- Gustav Nyquist made the most of his return from the minors. Niklas Kronwall was credited with the tie-breaking goal in the third period, Nyquist had 2 goals and the Detroit Red Wings broke a seven-game game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. Nyquist was recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League earlier in the day. He wasnt there because he wasnt good enough to make the team out of training camp, but due to salary cap reasons. He was one of Detroits best forwards in training camp and during the exhibition season after playing a key role for the Red Wings on the third line during last seasons playoffs. Only a shoulder separation to defenceman Danny Dekeyser in Tuesday nights 2-0 loss to Nashville, which put him on the long-term injured list, gave Detroit the cap space to bring Nyquist back. "Well see, well see what happens here," Nyquist said after the game. "Obviously this is where I want to play and I want to be a part of this team and hopefully well be able to work that out." He scored his first goal just 17 seconds into the game by putting in a loose puck from the bottom of the right circle. "It was a lucky bounce there, but it for sure was nice to get a quick one so that felt great," Nyquist said. Henrik Zetterberg assisted on both Nyquists tallies and Darren Helm added a goal for Detroit. Jonas Gustavsson made 24 saves. "We needed to win and it was a good win for us. I thought our team played well. We had lots of opportunities," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "We made it closer than we needed to, for sure. I thought we really carried territorial play. Our specialty teams were outstanding." Andrej Sekera scored twice and Brett Bellemore got his first NHL goal for Carolina. Justin Peters stopped 43 shots. "Theyre a good hockey team and they played well. . They owned the puck," Sekera said. Kronwall was credited with the 5-on-3 power-play goal that broke a 2-2 tie 8:29 into the third period when Hurricanes captain Eric Staal accidentally kicked the puck into his own net. Nyquist scored on a breakaway with 4:02 left. Sekera got his second goal with a short-handed effort in the last minute. Detroit killed off a 1:36 two-man disadvantage late in the second period and early in the third. "We were right there in the third period. We had a 5-on-3 that we had the chance to go up," Sekera said. "We didnt score and they scored on theirs." Sekera tied the game at 2 with 7:09 left in the middle period with his first goal. He made a move past the Red Wings Todd Bertuzzi and then beat Gustavsson with a wrist shot from the slot off the rush. It was Sekeras third goal. Bellemore put Carolina on the board 5:49 into the middle period, making it 2-1 by completing a give-and-go with right wing Radek Dvorak and whipping a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle past Gustavsson. Helm gave Detroit a 2-0 lead 2:37 into the second period. He also beat Peters with a shot from the bottom of the right circle for his third goal.   VANCOUVER -- Carl Robinson got the start he wanted Saturday, but he was still left al

VANCOUVER -- Carl Robinson got the start he wanted Saturday, but he was still left almost speechless. The delighted Vancouver Whitecaps coach was "lost for words" after his club scored three goals in the first 20 minutes en route to a 3-2 win over the San Jose Earthquakes. The Whitecaps (3-2-4) earned their first win in five games while the Earthquakes fell to 1-3-3. The game commemorated the first ever contest between Vancouver and San Jose, which was played May 5, 1974 when both teams were part of the original North American Soccer League. "I challenged them at the start of the game because it was a fantastic occasion today for the club and the tradition of the club," said Robinson. "I didnt want them to start slow where we have been in a few recent games." Despite the close score, the Whitecaps prevailed relatively easily after being forced to stage late comebacks in dramatic draws with Real Salt Lake and Los Angeles in their previous two games. Pedro Morales scored two goals a minute apart, with the first coming on a penalty-kick in the 19th minute and the second resulting from a shot from about 20 yards out in the 20th minute. "We got off to a great start, the team played very well, it was very exciting for the fan and we created a lot of (scoring) opportunities," said Morales. Kekuta Manneh also scored a goal and furnished an assist for Vancouver. "It was a big occasion for the club," said Manneh. "We all talked about it before the game and we had to come out and win the game. We were not that worried about the occasion, but weve got to do our job, and we did that, so it was great "We learned from our previous games." Chris Wondolowski, on a penalty-kick in the 45th minute and a lucky bounce in second-half stoppage time, scored both San Jose goals. "We did not come out with a good mindset," said Wondolowski. "Going down 3-0 against a very quality team, its way too big a hole to climb out of. We didnt do things right." Many fans wore 1970s-era clothing, including colourful bell-bottom pants that would make Norwegian curler Thomas Ulsruds crew envious, and donned long-haired wigs, fake handlebar moustaches and sunglasses. The attire was part of the Whitecaps tribute to the days of disco music. Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit started after being kept home from the previous weekends road game against San Jose for rest purposes. Meanwhile, Vancouver striker Kenny Miller began the game on the bench before coming on in the second half, as Robinson used a 4-2-3-1 alignment with Darren Mattocks deployed as the lone forward. As a result, Manneh, who has been used mostly as a substitute, started in midfield in a move that paid early dividends. Manneh gave the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute as he fired a first shot off the near post and then put his own rebound in off the far post. Crediting Morales passing prowess, Robinson said he did not have to say too much to his players about starting well after he had chewed them out at half-time in the previous game. "Obviously, after the reaction at Salt Lake at half-time, they got back in character," he said. Mannehs goal came after DeMerit checked the ball away from charging San Jose forward Yannick Djalo and sent the ball up the left flank. With Djalo injured in the process and kneeling on the turf, the Whitecaps were able to capitalize on an odd-man situation. "As soon a Yannick went down they scored the first goal. It was just 10 minutes where we couldnt cope with them," said Earthquakes coach Mark Watson. Morales put the Whitecaps ahead 2-0 on a penalty-kick after Mattocks was deemed to have been taken down while deking with the ball in the San Jose box. With the sellout crowd of 21,000 standing in anticipation, Morales rolled a shot into the left corner after San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch elected to go to his right. A minute later, Morales notched his second goal as he put a shot into the same corner from just outside the top of the San Jose box. After scoring the goal, Morales unwittingly doffed his jersey, waved it over his head, and excitedly ran bare-chested to the bench -- only to get an automatic yellow card for excessive celebration. Vancouver lost a shining Mattocks in the 30th minute after he pulled up with what Robinson described as a hamstring injury. Mattocks was replaced by second-year pro Erik Hurtado, but the change had little effect as Vancouver finished with 17 shots, including 13 in the first half, including nine on target. San Jose put just four of seven total shots on Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted, who was still sharp when necessary as the Caps continued mastery over a traditional powerhouse. The Earthquakes have yet to win in Vancouver in nine all-time MLS meetings with the Whitecaps. Overall, Vancouver holds a 4-1-4 edge in the series. Wondolowski, who now has nine career goals against Vancouver, was less than satisfied with the comeback attempt. He admitted his second goal, which redirected off DeMerit, was fortuitous after he did not get much behind the shot. "(The late rally) was too little, too late," said Wondolowski. "We cant be doing that. a This loss is unacceptable." Notes: San Joses Djalo was replaced by Alan Gordon in the 14th minute. a The Whitecaps had a goal disallowed in the 81st minute as Gershon Koffie was found guilty of a hand-ball just before he scored. a Whitecaps president Bobby Lenarduzzi became the first inductee into the clubs new ring of honour. During a pre-game ceremony, Los Angeles Lakers star Steve Nash, a Whitecaps minority owner, presented Lenarduzzi with a ring in conjunction with the honour. Nash jokingly dropped to one knee, like a hopeful groom proposing. a Lenarduzzi played on the original Whitecaps team, which was also honoured in the pre-game festivities, with many members taking part. a Gordon was cautioned in the 70th minute after he knocked Matias Laba in the back while the Cap played a header. a Former Whitecap Atiba Harris subbed in for San Jose during the second half.   MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Grizzlies know they have to stop blowing fourth-quarter leads.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Grizzlies know they have to stop blowing fourth-quarter leads. Consecutive overtime wins makes the needed corrections much easier for Memphis. Mike Conley scored five of his 20 points in overtime, and the Grizzlies beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 98-95 Thursday night to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round Western Conference series. "Obviously, were happy with the win but disappointed at the way we handled that last quarter," Conley said. "We knew they were going to make runs. We knew theyd keep fighting because thats what they do, and its the playoffs. Theyre going to make runs. Theyre going to make plays. They have two of the best players in the league." Still, the Grizzlies won their second straight overtime game this time after leading by 17 before going cold for most of the final 7:43 of regulation. Courtney Lee clinched the win, hitting three of four free throws in the final 10.9 seconds of OT. Game 4 is Saturday night in Memphis. The Thunder, who had the NBAs second-best record in the regular season, have to figure out how to shoot better against the team that ousted them in the conference semifinals in five games last year. "We just got to stay together, and we will do that," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. "Were down right now in the series 1-2, but just got to focus all of our attention after tomorrows review of the film together as a group and take it all to the next game and do our best to tie it up and take it home 2-2." NBA scoring champ Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook each scored 30 for the Thunder, who even got another four-point play in the final minute to force overtime. This time, it was Westbrooks turn with 26.6 seconds left. But Durant missed all eight 3-point attempts and was 10 of 27. Westbrook was 9 of 26, though he grabbed 13 rebounds. The Thunder hit only 3 of 12 overall in overtime. "Kevin is really prideful," Brooks said. "He loves what he does and loves doing it with the guys that hes playing with. He was frustrated a few times with himself missing shots he normally makes in his sleep." Durant said they have to get easier shots and will figure it out for the next game. "Personally, I think we missed a lot of good looks, some open 3s, some lay-ins, some I wish I could take back," Durant said. Zach Randolph scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds for Memphis, which now has won 15 straight at home. Tony Allen, who scored 16 points for Memphis, gave the Thunder one final chance at an improbable play to keep the game alive. After Lee split his free throws with 1.7 seconds left, Westbrook was racing up the right sideline trying to get a shot off before the buzzer. Allen tripped Westbrook, sending him to the line for three attempts. Westbrook hit the first, missed the second and then clanked the third off the rim on purpose. But Ed Davis tipped away the ball to seal the win for Memphis. Marc Gasol scored 14 points for Memphis. Beno Udrih added 12 points, and Lee finished with 10. Serge Ibaka had 12 points for the Thunder, which went 5 of 28 beyond the arc. The Thunder trailed 81-64 in the fourth quarter. Then they scored 17 straight with Westbrooks 3-pointer in the left corner tying it up with 57.3 seconds left, and setting up yet another thrilling finish between these teams. "We got to be better down the stretch is the thing that sticks out," Allen said. Memphis couldnt protect its lead by going completely cold after a hook shot by Kosta Koufos with 7:43 left. The Grizzlies didnt score again until Allens baseline dunk with 57.3 seconds to go. He then scored on a layup after stealing the ball from Westbrook for an 85-81 lead. But Westbrook made up for his turnover on the next trip down the court. He hit a 3-pointer and dropped to the floor on a hard foul by Allen. His free throw tied it at 85 with 26.6 seconds left. Memphis tried to hold for the late shot, but Conleys one-handed layup clanked twice on the rim before rolling off. Durants 3-pointer for the win missed harmlessly off the backboard, sending these teams into their second straight overtime. In overtime, the Thunder took their first lead since 9-8 on a three-point play by Durant for an 88-85 lead. Notes: Mike Miller checked in with 1:06 left in the first quarter for his first playoff game in Memphis since May 1, 2006, in his first stint with the Grizzlies. ... Memphis last lost at home Feb. 5 to Dallas. ... Memphis now is 6-1 in overtime games against the Thunder since the start of the 2010-11 season. ... He considered undergoing platelet-rich plasma therapy to fix his arm, but announced in August his decision to have Tommy John surgery. TAMPA, Fla. -- Joe Girardi found out about Derek Jeters retirement announcement the same way almost everyone else did: when the New York Yankees captain posted a letter to the world on his Facebook page this week. Girardi left snowy New York on Friday and arrived at spring training for his seventh year as Yankees manager, and he spent the first eight minutes of his 20-minute opening news conference discussing Jeters decision to retire after this season. "I think we were probably all a little bit taken aback by it," Girardi said. "Youre never sure how someones going to do it, but I had no inkling that thats what he was thinking." After missing the playoffs for just the second time in 19 years, the Yankees were back in business when pitchers and catchers reported ahead of Saturdays opening workout. Alex Rodriguezs locker was empty following his season-long suspension. Masahiro Tanaka inherited Mariano Riveras locker and Shawn Kelley got Andy Pettittes stall. Scott Sizemore, attending camp on a minor league contract, was assigned Robinson Canos jersey No. 24. Position players report next Wednesday, when Jeter holds a news conference at Steinbrenner Field to explain his decision. Girardi has exchanged texts with the 39-year-old shortstop but has not spoken with him. "This is going to be a guy thats hard to replace in your clubhouse and on your club," he said. "Its the nature of the business where people age and they move on and they go and do different things in their life, and in our life its a little bit quicker than some of the other working people of this world." Jeter was limited to 17 games last year after fracturing his left ankle in the 2012 playoffs and breaking it again last spring during his rehabilitation. Girardi said Jeter always told him "I feel great," but that he could sense frustration. After working out Friday with Brian Roberts at the Yankees minor league complex, Jeter demurred discussing his decision. "It makes no sense to do it here and then do it again over there, so Ill do it all over there one time," he said. And so now Jeter will go on a valedictory tour, much like Mariano Rivera did last year. JJeter is not the type to call attention to himself, making his public announcement before spring training all the more surprising.dddddddddddd "It could have been just watching how Mo did it, and how much fun everyone seemed to have with it with Mo," Girardi said. "He might have said, you know, its a pretty good way to go out." Jeter has won five World Series titles with the Yankees but none since 2009, and his final lap of the major leagues figures to set the theme as New York tries for title No. 28. His teammates looked forward to speaking with him after he reports. "Not really surprised, saddened I guess that hes not going to be around," ace pitcher CC Sabathia said. "You want a guy like that to play forever." Having witnessed Chipper Jones final season with the Atlanta Braves in 2012, new Yankees catcher Brian McCann is looking forward to Jeters last go-round. "Hes been the face of baseball since he broke in," McCann said. "I went through it with one Hall of Famer. Im going to go through it with another." David Robertson, inheriting the closers role from Rivera, hadnt thought Jeter would make his plans known before the seasons end. "But Im really glad he did," he said. "I think its going to give the fans a chance to come out this year and see him in his final season in pinstripes." Robertsons new job is one of many changes for the Yankees, who spent $471 million on free agents, including a $20 million payment to Tanakas old club in Japan. McCann and outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran are among the many newcomers, and first baseman Mark Teixeira is returning from a wrist injury that sidelined him most of last season. Cano -- the Yankees top hitter -- left for a $240 million, 10-year deal with Seattle. Girardi predicted for the April 1 opener at Houston that Yankees players at every position other than pitcher will be different from opening day last year. The only time thats happened in franchise history was 1947, according to STATS. "I think it is probably the biggest transition Ive been through," Girardi said. "I need to learn a lot of new faces fairly quickly." ' ' '
