What do a lion tamer, a hedge trimmer, a robotics engineer and a mole rat researcher have in common? Good question. “Fast, Cheap and Out of Control” is Morris’s strangest mishmash of a surreal, visual essay. Yet he finds a way to make it coherent and profound. Morris’s latest film is a pleasant portrait of a photographer known for taking giant, life size Polaroids. It contains heavy themes around mortality and impermanence. As a personal friend, Morris doesn’t shoot this film with his signature “Interrotron” technique. He finds he can relate to Elsa Dorfman’s philosophies on truth in art. Similar in vein to “Gates of Heaven” but less bizarre, Morris sets up shop in a rural town in the South and finds the most peculiar local color. Whether it’s turkey hunters or a man who raises wild livestock, you have to wonder if Morris is asking sincere questions or just gawking. Filming was also done around Ukraine and even at the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear power station itself. Russian authorities have offered no comment on the program, but Mr. Slivyak, for one, says it will not be liked by an establishment that remains heavily invested in nuclear energy and that still operates several Chernobyl-type reactors. What happened 33 years ago had monumental consequences for the Soviet Union, according to Vitaly Tolstikov, a historian of nuclear power at Chelyabinsk State Institute of Culture in the Russian Urals. “As a result of the disaster, people started to doubt the ability of the state to manage things. They lost faith, and this may be considered one of the causes of the Soviet Union’s collapse,” he says. Some consequences of the accident are still being counted today, Mr. Tolstikov notes: “The long-term health costs are still not calculated. Whole districts of Ukraine and Belarus ceased to be economically active.” Belarus, another post-Soviet state, is where most of Chernobyl’s radiation came down. Usually shows may take a while to gain a footing, but Squeeze and later on Tooms set the standard for MOTWs to come. Out of the earlier mytharc episodes, I think these are the most underrated. I felt that they conveyed tension perhaps better than any other episode with the stuff on the train and the events leading up to it. X showed another side, risking his life to save Mulder which only made his death feel worse. Like most X-Files episodes, we didn’t really no what was real or not it the end. There was the alien autopsy, lepers, Japanese, and it didn’t all fit together nicely. Eventually this made the show hard to digest, but in the beginning, it created intrigue and mystery. When The X-Files does comedy, it’s never overt jokes with rich punch lines. It was a terrific episode with the hilariously fraudulent Stupendous Yappi, and Clyde Bruckman, played by Peter Boyle.|Picture this: It's April 26, 1986—just another spring day in Ukraine—until an explosion at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl changes everything. Two workers die almost immediately, radiation is released into the atmosphere, and Chernobyl becomes the site of one of history's worst man-made disasters nearly overnight. Today—nearly 33 years later—the name "Chernobyl" is still synonymous with disaster. And still, people are fascinated by the mystery of what exactly happened that day—and the days following. How could this have happened? Why wasn't it prevented? You might find some of the answers to those questions in a new HBO miniseries, aptly titled Chernobyl, that dramatizes the real-life disaster. What can you expect from the TV show? Well, if the line "You are dealing with something that has never occurred on this planet" from the recently released trailer is any indication, it's going to be pretty dark. Like, you might not want to watch this show right before bedtime kind of dark. What's Chernobyl actually about? Besides chronicling the Chernobyl disaster, HBO's dramatized retelling follows three real-life people who tried to save lives in the aftermath of the explosion. Soviet nuclear physicists Ulana Khomyuk and Valery Legasov, and Soviet Deputy Prime Minister Boris Shcherbina attempt to lessen the damage and figure out what exactly caused the nuclear explosion in the first place. When can you watch it? The five-episode miniseries premieres on Saturday, May 6, at 9 p.m. Chernobyl 5 Episode.
Reports of long-term health effects from Chernobyl vary, but the disaster contaminated an area inhabited by millions. Pripyat and other communities in the exclusion zone have become decaying ghost towns. And despite the fact that experts say that the areas closest to the reactor will be uninhabitable for 3,000 years, some have ignored warnings of radiation and returned to their villages at the outer portions of the exclusion zone. Some areas have been deemed safe enough for at least short visits, including Pripyat, which now sees some 60,000 tourists per year, the BBC reports. The city’s nearly unused amusement park has become an eerie symbol of the disaster. How much of HBO’s Chernobyl is true? One thing that definitely isn’t true-to-life about the miniseries are the character’s accents. The English-language show is a co-production with the UK network Sky and features a largely British cast performing in their natural voices instead of affecting Russian or Ukrainian accents. The series tells the story of scientists, engineers, and first responders involved in the disaster and its aftermath, and hews closely to the real life events. Most major characters are based on real people, like Jared Harris’s Valery Legasov, the whistleblowing chemist who lead the investigation into the disaster, and Stellan Skarsgaard’s Boris Shcherbina, then the USSR’s Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers. However, Emily Watson’s character, principled nuclear expert Ulana Khomyuk, is a composite based on several scientists who responded to the disaster. Chernobyl Episode 6 watch online.
